We match a Big Brother with a Little Brother taking care to ensure they have similar interests. Matches spend one-to-one time together doing things that friends do… like talking, playing ball in the park, watching a movie or just hanging out. You don’t have to change your life to become a Big Brother… having a Little Brother just means you have someone else to share your life.
The Big Brothers program is our most recognized. Littles, generally between the ages of 6 and 16, who could really use a friend, are matched with a Big - a responsible, caring adult who is 18 years of age or older. Littles excitedly look forward to being matched with their Big and patiently await their first meeting!
Making the right match between a Big and Little is a very important part of the mentoring process. All prospective volunteers are carefully screened, and a thorough inquiry is done to ensure that they are reliable, caring adults. We get to know the Littles and the Bigs - their likes, dislikes, interests, and personality - and create our matches accordingly.
After a successful match is made, a caseworker will stay in touch with each party to provide any support they can while the Big and Little establish their new friendship. In just a few hours a week, for a minimum of one year, you may create a friendship that lasts a lifetime! And the rewards are something that money just can't buy.
Many studies have confirmed that a mentor can increase a child's self-esteem and performance in school. That's something you can both take pride in! You see, being a Big Brother is simply about being a friend. It's about laughing, playing, dreaming, creating new experiences, and just plain-old being there when he needs a helping hand. Our focus is on fun, friendship and low cost activities. Access to a car is a definite asset. It's easy to get involved:
