Our Mission Every child in North Simcoe and Huronia that needs a mentor has a mentor. Big Brothers of North Simcoe & Big Sisters Association of Huronia Big Brothers of North Simcoe has been creating friendships since 1974. We started out matching Big Brothers with Little Brothers and have grown to include a variety of different programs. Since then we have served more than 1000 boys!
Big Sisters Association of Huronia was originally conceived by the Huronia Social Planning and the Quota Club of Huronia in 1976. In March of 2002 the Board of Directors of Big Brothers of North Simcoe and the Board of Directors of Big Sisters Association of Huronia adopted each other to their respective Boards. The result? A Common Board of Directors which governs the two separate agencies. Big Brothers of North Simcoe and Big Sisters Association of Huronia are working in partnership whenever possible in order to share resources and reduce costs, and to ultimately… serve more children!
We are proud of our achievements and continue to strive to be on the leading edge of the Big Brothers Big Sisters movement in Canada...
Where We Come From The Big Brothers Big Sisters international movement was born in 1903 in Cincinnati, when a young businessman observed a street youth sorting through garbage for food. The businessman befriended the child and became the first “Big Brother”. Recognizing the power of what he had done, the man enlisted some of his friends to do the same… Canada’s first agency started in Toronto in 1913, serving youth referred to them through the Courts. As the movement grew, a board of directors emerged and professionals were hired to meet the ever increasing need for mentorship. In 1964 Big Brothers of Canada was formally established and by 1972 had over sixty agencies in operation - serving over 3,000 young people nationally. Today, we remain the largest youth-mentoring organization, serving more than 23,000 children in more than 1,000 communities across Canada. The movement has also grown beyond North America to many countries worldwide.
